Two of the pillars that support Rome’s burgeoning improvisation scene are – the ‘Franco Ferguson Collective‘ and ‘Improvvisatore Involontario’. Franco Ferguson describe their output as ‘impro-jazz’. It reflects the very diverse group of musicians who gather in Rome under the Franco Ferguson banner, with many shades of improvising style appearing side by side. It creates a very fertile soil for collaboration, with many musicians crossing from their normal genres to taste different musical flavours, all in the heady atmosphere of an excited and at times voluble audience. ‘Improvvisatore Involontario‘, by contrast, is a federation of musicians who pursue a more cerebral approach to improvisation, with an impressive catalogue of CD releases. Heimweh have connections to both organizations. Heimweh‘s members have backgrounds in rock, Balkan music, straight jazz and classical music, but all these rambunctious individual elements become submerged into an energetic style of free improvisation that is nevertheless governed and regulated by a shared sensibility, with high levels of musicianship.
